Many special education professionals are
required to be expert at accommodation options
for a wide range of disabling conditions—a
task that is virtually impossible to keep up
with, given the proliferation of assistive
technology products and other accommodation
procedures. vrXpert is a powerful
internet-based system that provides
research-based tools for documenting
functioning and identifying specific
accommodation products and services based upon
the unique needs and vocational goals of each
individual. The Functional Assessment includes
a comprehensive format for identifying what an
individual can and cannot do in a wide range of
functional areas, and allows the use of a
variety of disability templates that can be
quickly individualized. U.S. Department of
Labor O*NET data are incorporated into vrXpert
to provide valuable information regarding job
descriptions and job task requirements. The
real power in vrXpert comes in its Needs
Assessment feature, which performs a complex
database analysis to develop a list of
potential barriers or “needs” that may
require accommodation. To do this, the Needs
Assessment compares the results of a
person’s Functional Assessment to the
requirements of the desired job to identify the
barriers that will need to be overcome.
Furthermore, these “needs” are indexed to
an accommodation database that holds over
20,000 products and service accommodation
ideas. Each “need” can be clicked on to
produce a list of accommodation ideas
specifically designed to address the
corresponding need.
